The bank was created under Royal Decree in 1857 with the mandate of Queen Elizabeth II of Spain. The initiative to create the bank was from some merchants of that time in Santander.
As of 1923, it expanded rapidly by opening various branches throughout the region. In 1994, it absorbed the Banco Español de Crédito (Banesto) being one of the most important acquisitions in its history. In 1991, the Banco Central and the Banco Hispanoamericano had been merged, creating the Banco Central Hispano. That entity joined the Banco de Santander 8 years later.

It was known as Banco Santander Central Hispano (BSCH), and in 2007, its name was changed to Banco Santander. In 2010, it started a commercial banking business in the United States and Germany in 2011. In 2013, it fully acquired Banesto and Banif.
